Malinda Russell, a black woman, was born in the South to a free mother. With the racism in the South, Malinda planned to immigrate to Liberia, but she was robbed during her travels.
As a single mother, she lived in Tennessee and worked several jobs before opening up a bakery. After 6 years of running a very successful pastry shop, Malinda was once again robbed by guerillas who threatened to kill her. She fled to Michigan where she had to restart her life at the age of 52. While in Michigan, she wrote a cookbook to raise money to move back home.
In 1866, Malinda's book became the first cookbook published by a Black woman. Her book is filled with over 250 recipes that showed the complexity of African-American cuisine.
