-Harper was raised by her Uncle William and Aunt Henrietta Watkins, who were renowned abolitionists. As a gifted orator, Harper continued in their work and fought to end slavery. She wrote numerous speeches and traveled across the United States as a lecturer.

-Before turning 22 years old, Harper wrote her first small volume of poetry entitled "Forest Leaves." Her poems and short stories were published in numerous anti-slavery newspapers.

-Harper held numerous leadership positions such as the co-founder of the National Association of Colored Women and the director of the American Association of Colored Youth.
